Howdy. I’m Garrett Winslow… fine art landscape and portrait photographer, master fine art printer, photographic educator, and the fellow who keeps the Campfire burning.
I’ve been teaching photography for over twenty-five years now. Long before “online courses” were a thing, I was standing in front of packed rooms teaching my live program, Photography: The Basics and Beyond, to more than 150,000 students. ByWinslowCampfire is simply that same work… brought inside where the coffee’s hot and nobody’s in a hurry.
The Way I Teach
I’ve never believed photography was something you rush. The world pushes fast enough already. One of the first things I tell folks is this… and I’ve been saying it for decades:
it’s not what you look at that matters — it’s what you see.
Once that sinks in, photography starts to feel a whole lot less like button-pushing and a whole lot more like storytelling.
From there we walk the full trail…from idea, to capture, into the digital darkroom, and finally to finished photographs that don’t just sit on a hard drive wondering what went wrong.
Sometimes that ends in a print on your wall. Sometimes it ends in you finally trusting your own eyes. Both are worth the trip.
I’ve spent a lifetime not just making photographs, but finishing them properly. While I’m best known for my landscapes, I’ve also spent years creating thoughtful portrait work… the kind that honors people the same way I honor the land.
Over the years I’ve wandered into just about every corner of photography that ever caught my curiosity…including infrared work and long nights under the Milky Way, with a back pocket full of quiet places I’ve found the hard way. I don’t share those places lightly, but I do teach how to see them.
Why ByWinslowCampfire Exists
When learning moved online, something important got lost.
People were shown what buttons to click in Lightroom and Photoshop…but never why, never when, and never how all those moving parts fit together.
So I built the thing I kept wishing I could send folks to:
a calm, complete digital darkroom path that teaches you how to use the camera and computer you already own…before you ever spend another dollar chasing gear you don’t need yet.
